Who Needs a Temporary Trip Permit?

If you’re operating a large commercial vehicle and are not registered with International Registration Plan (IRP), you’re likely to need a trip permit for the states or provinces you’re traveling through.

Typically, you may need a trip permit outside of your home state if:

  • Your vehicle or trailer is not IRP-registered.
  • Your vehicle has over 26,000 lbs. in GVW or
  • Your vehicle has 3 or more axles or
  • Your tow vehicle and trailer have a combined GVW of over 26,000 lbs.

What Is IRP?

The International Registration Plan (IRP) is an agreement that covers 48 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and Canadian provinces. Essentially, when your vehicle becomes IRP-registered, you record the distance traveled in each state or province and pay the appropriate fees for your distance traveled.

If your vehicle is not IRP-registered, you’ll likely need a temporary trip permit for travel in any state outside of where your vehicle is registered.

Who Is Exempt From Temporary Trip Permit & IRP Requirements?

Your vehicle could be exempt from IRP and trip permit requirements if it meets one of the following criteria:

  • You’re operating a government-owned vehicle.
  • You’re operating a recreational vehicle used for personal travel.
  • You’re operating a chartered bus.
