Who Needs a Fuel Permit?

If you’re operating a large commercial vehicle and not registered with the IFTA, you’re likely to need a fuel permit for the states or provinces you’re traveling through.

Typically, you may need a fuel permit if:

  • Your vehicle or trailer is not IFTA-registered.
  • Your power unit has 2 axles and a GVW of over 26,000 lbs. or
  • Your power unit has 3 or more axles regardless of weight or
  • Your tow vehicle and trailer have a combined GVW of over 26,000 lbs.

What Is IFTA?

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is an agreement that covers 48 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and Canadian provinces. Essentially, when your vehicle is IFTA-registered, you record the distance traveled in each state or province and pay the appropriate fees for your distance traveled.

If your vehicle is not IFTA-registered, you’ll likely need a fuel permit for your travel.

Who Is Exempt from Fuel Permit & IFTA requirements?

Exemptions vary by state, but your vehicle could be exempt from IFTA and trip permit requirements if it meets one of the following criteria:

  • You’re operating a government-owned vehicle.
  • You’re operating a recreational vehicle used for personal travel.
  • You’re operating a chartered bus.
  • You’re operating a vehicle with farm plates.
  • You’re operating an off-highway vehicle.
